Filed under: Softbank Mobile There are a few UMA-based solutions floating around for automatically transferring PBX lines to phones when employees are in the office, but Japan's SoftBank is taking a more direct approach by cutting WiFi out of the equation with its new White Office service launching in March. All of the key functions of a PBX -- transfer, hold, and so on -- will be supported, and unlike UMA, mobiles can be used as extensions whether their users are in or out of the office. So yeah, sorry, Japanese folks -- escaping work just got that much harder. Pricing will be announced closer to launch.[Via Slashphone]SoftBank's 'White Office' service marries landlines with mobiles originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Thu, 01 Jan 2009 14:31:00 EST. Mobile browsing is getting better and better, although my G1’s built-in one is too slow, Opera Mini is a little weird, and Safari is too limited. Firefox aims to hit all three where it hurts, being fast, easy to control, and open to expansion. Add-ons for Firefox are supposed to work for Fennec eventually, which sounds fishy but would be totally awesome. Mozilla is looking at a major release for as many mobile platforms as possible, including things like e-book readers. How sweet would it be to have a full-featured web browser on a Kindle or eReader-type device? Hopefully that’ll happen sometime in the next 6 months. Filed under: Software, RIM While you may be in love with the 480 x 360-pixel screen on the latest and greatest 'Berry straight out of Waterloo, we know that the really tantalizing draw of the 8900 is that gorgeous theme. Luckily for all you wannabe addicts out there, CrackBerry Forums member Tom1|21 has worked some magic with Plazmic's Theme Builder and has made the theme available for all 83xx and 88xx devices -- albeit for a price. Of course, the truly classifiable BB elite would've known that this very same theme -- or something remarkably similar -- was available for the incredibly low price of free just days ago. Interestingly, the original forum post has been updated and points to purchase links rather than the free-OTA download links that it was pointing to prior. A little bit of searching might lead you to the free version, and you can start saving up that coinage for the finally-available Sling client -- once it loses the beta label and gets priced, that is. Or, you can just bypass the whole theme situation and hopefully get the real deal sometime around February 18th.Read - CrackBerry Forums threadRead - CrackBerry Blog theme availabilityCurve 8900 Replica theme now available for impatient, theme-obsessed CrackBerry addicts originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Wed, 31 Dec 2008 09:02:00 EST. Filed under: Software, HTC, Android We've already seen it go down unofficially, but we've received word from HTC today that Android's coveted "Cupcake" branch of updates and fixes -- or at least a majority of it -- will likely be making it to the G1 in the future as a legitimate over-the-air push. HTC isn't involved in deciding what updates get pushed to the G1 or when, but given the update cadence so far and the G1's support for Cupcake's capabilities, the company believes that it's just a matter of time before T-Mobile makes it happen. The timing is still a big question -- HTC's more or less out of the loop on the schedule, and it's up to Google and T-Mobile to figure out how it's going to play out. We'll keep you updated as we find out more!Update: We pressed HTC spokespeople to give us a little more to go on, but got the standard "we can't comment on rumors or speculation" line. T-Mobile, Google, your move -- you've got plenty of folks waiting.
