RIM’s BlackBerry Storm shows its cheaper side on Amazon

8. February 2009

Filed under: Handsets, RIM, Verizon Wireless, EV-DO, CDMA, BlackBerry OS Verizon's BlackBerry Storm is getting a little kick in its pricing courtesy of an Amazon rebate-free rebate. The deal here is that the infamous touchscreen BlackBerry is now $99.99 on a two-year stint, no rebate paperwork, no mailing things anywhere, just shell out cash, get phone, call people. Verizon has a buy one get one free thing going on right now, so if you're looking for two Storms for the price of one -- and that one is still $199 -- you can head on over to see them. It seems that manufacturers will get the 6.5 update in April and those devices should hit consumer’s hands the following September. WinMo 7, however, should be released to manufacturers in November followed by devices in April 2010. Hopefully the upcoming release of 6.5 is special enough to keep our attention cause the mobile platform is dying and we can only imagine what the open source Android will evolve into a year from now; not to mention Palm’s webOS. LG Arena (KM900) pops official, brings along 3D S-Class UI

8. February 2009

Filed under: Handsets, LG, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA Rather than waiting for the KM900 to get lost amongst hundreds of other handsets set to vie for attention at Mobile World Congress, LG has decided it best to go ahead and make its newest touchscreen handset official a few days early. The so-called Arena, which will take the crown as LG's "flagship phone for 2009," is hoping to wow onlookers with its dynamic 3D S-Class user interface. According to Dr. Skott Ahn, president and CEO of LG Mobile: "The direct, intuitive and dynamic S-Class UI will be unlike anything that has appeared on a mobile phone before." We're not quite sure we believe all that just yet, but there's little doubt this bugger will be keen on multimedia. Other specs include integrated Dolby / DivX technology, support for HSDPA 7.2Mbps, WiFi, Assisted GPS and "far more" amenities that should be uncovered in Barcelona. Excited yet?[Via UnwiredView, thanks Staska]LG Arena (KM900) pops official, brings along 3D S-Class UI originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Sun, 08 Feb 2009 10:16:00 EST. Samsung’s SPH-W7100 to feature enhanced safety features

7. February 2009

Filed under: Handsets, Samsung Samsung's SPH-W7100 managed to slip through the FCC's database in December of 2008, and now we're being clued in as to what all the handset will bring to the table. While details surrounding specifications and the like are still scant, we are notified that the mobile will be the company's first to "offer the SOS function with a ring, rather than a button, for ease of use." The so-called safety phone was designed with women, children and puny men in mind, and it gives users the ability to evade dodgy situations by emitting an alarm and sending out a location-laced SMS to numbers that you choose. Unfortunately, it doesn't double as a switchblade, which means you're still on your own should your attacker mean business.[Via textually]Read - FCC spottingRead - SOS detailsSamsung's SPH-W7100 to feature enhanced safety features originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Fri, 06 Feb 2009 13:13:00 EST. LG’s LBA-C300 Bluetooth ‘QWERTY Card’ is the best calculator look-alike you’ve seen all week

7. February 2009

Filed under: LG, Accessories We could just hug LG for this one. The LBA-C300, which just ran by the FCC, is the texting equivalent of a Bluetooth headset -- a Bluetooth device that allows you to operate your phone without actually pulling out your phone, except this time it's for hitting your peeps with rapidly a rapidly composed "LOL" or "LOL, U R." The generous keyboard looks incredibly typable, and while the entire unit borders on the size of some phones on the market, it means you can leave that bulky numeric keypad dumbphone or hard-to-use touchscreen smartphone in your pocket or bag and get some real communication done with the QWERTY Card. You can also view and store contact info, peep a clock, set an alarm and work you calendar from the device -- the Bluetooth pairing means you can even remotely control your phone's camera, though obviously much of this functionality depends on what phone you pair it with, LG phones are likely to get much better treatment. No word on release date or price, but we'll probably know more once LG actually announces the device officially.[Via Unwired View]LG's LBA-C300 Bluetooth 'QWERTY Card' is the best calculator look-alike you've seen all week originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Fri, 06 Feb 2009 11:24:00 EST. Donna Dubinsky steps down from Palm’s board, Rajiv Dutta steps in

6. February 2009

Comments Off

Filed under: Palm, Misc Courtesy of Palm's most recent 8-K filing, the general public is being informed that Palm's former CEO Donna Dubinsky (pictured) is stepping down from the firm's board. If you'll recall, Elevation Partners decided that it would fork over another $100 million in order to help Palm stun the world and reinvigorate itself at CES this year, and as part of that agreement, Elevation "has the right to designate an additional director for election to the Company's Board of Directors." In light of the board wishing to maintain its current size, Ms. Dubinsky freely offered to resign her spot immediately, and at least officially, her decision was not made due to any disagreement with Palm. We're also told that Elevation has designated Rajiv Dutta -- who retired as President of eBay Marketplaces and Executive VP of eBay last October -- for election to the company's board, and said board is expected to meet shortly to consider both the resignation offer and Mr. Dutta's appointment.[Via PalmInfoCenter, image courtesy of NY Times]Donna Dubinsky steps down from Palm's board, Rajiv Dutta steps in originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Wed, 04 Feb 2009 07:12:00 EST. LG Arena KM900 gets further detailed

6. February 2009

Filed under: Handsets, LG We've already gotten a pretty good look at LG's curiously familiar Arena KM900 phone, and we're now starting to get some more details as well, although LG is still managing to keep a few things under wraps for the presumably imminent announcement. Apparently, this one will boast GSM/UMTS/HSDPA connectivity, along with a high-res 3-inch 800x480 display (no word on resistive or capacitive), and some form of mobile TV, although specifics on that are a bit light at the moment. The phone also apparently measures just 11.5mm thick, which makes it a smidgen slimmer than the iPhone and, as we had heard before, it could be out in Europe as soon as next month -- on T-Mobile Germany for starters, it seems.[Via Unwired View] LG Arena KM900 gets further detailed originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Wed, 04 Feb 2009 14:13:00 EST. The biggest decline was in mobile phones with a 51 percent decline in revenue. Motorola hasn’t had a hit in years. The company, it seems, is still spinning its wheels and generally churning out as much as it can as quickly as it can, ignoring its the current competitive market. While it’s not unusual to see losses like these this quarter it’s abundantly clear that something needs to change over at Motorola if they are even going to stay in the game. While the rest of their business is doing comparatively fine, a 50 percent drop in business along with little, if anything, in terms of cellphones in stores or in the pipeline is quite disconcerting. Nokia E75 clearly in the wild in Vietnam

5. February 2009

Filed under: Handsets, Nokia, Symbian, GSM, EDGE We can't say for sure why Nokia's still-not-official E75 is camped out in Vietnam, but it is. It definitely is. Unlike the Mr. Blurrycam shots we've grown (sadly) accustomed to dealing with, the smattering of shots hosted up in the read link are clear as day. We're also told it was seen sporting a 2.4-inch display, a 3.2 megapixel camera, Symbian S60, WiFi, A-GPS, a 3.5 millimeter headphone jack and a slide-out keyboard to boot. Hit up the read link for more in the wild snaps, and go ahead and consider this one a lock for an official Mobile World Congress unveiling. At your own risk, of course.[Via GSMArena]Nokia E75 clearly in the wild in Vietnam originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Thu, 05 Feb 2009 15:03:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.Read

Vodafone reports 14 percent rise in revenue

Things may not be entirely awesome for most operators these days, but at least Vodafone's making some cash in this cash-strapped market. According to its most recent quarterly results, the outfit has notched a 14 percent increase in revenue, which was helped by the weak pound and exceptional sales in India. More specifically, it realized sales of

Palm Pre landing mid-March?

5. February 2009

Comments Off

Filed under: Handsets, Palm, Sprint, EV-DO, CDMA, webOS There's no shortage of disparate and sketchy launch date predictions for the Pre, but here's one with a little bit of meat to it. Boy Genius Report has a purported End Of Life list for Sprint, which lists the projected deaths of various phones, along with the planned replacement, with a bit of overlap in timing to keep things moving along smoothly. The Pre shows up as "target in-stock 3/15," replacing the Palm 755p, which is slated to fizzle out in late May. Similarly, the Palm Treo Pro is slotted for February 15th, replacing the 800w, which lines up with the phone's known launch date. Naturally, we can't vouch for the origination of this list or its accuracy, but it sounds reasonably legit, and it's the best thing we've got on a Pre launch date up until now -- and quite a bit more encouraging than the prospect of waiting until the summer.Palm Pre landing mid-March? originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Wed, 04 Feb 2009 10:04:00 EST. Thus, a flurry of leaked mobile devices continues to grow, day by day. In today’s pre-release news, BGR has got his hands on a crystal clear image of an unidentified Acer smartphone.  All that can be gathered from the shot is that it has a strange swiveling QWERTY key pad. Is it just me, or is it really unclear how the two halves will slide back together? Oh, and it has a touch screen (duh) and it’s not clear whether it will run on WinMo, Android, or some other funky fresh OS.  Keep your eyes peeled, kids! RC33 G1 firmware update gets detailed in full

4. February 2009

Comments Off

Filed under: Handsets, T-Mobile, Android We've already heard of one big new feature included in the RC33 firmware update for the G1, but with the update now trickling out into the wild, we've finally got the complete rundown of what's been added and fixed. Leading the list of additions is the ability to check for software updates, and receive automatic updates in the Android Market when an updated application is available. You'll also now be able to take advantage of Google Voice Search, save pictures received as MMS, and report comments in the Market as spam when you see fit. The update also apparently fixes some messaging stability issues, as well as a problem with a lack of reminders on calendar items, and a pesky issue that caused some G1s to hang at the G1 screen. Hit up the link below for the complete breakdown, and keep an eye on your handset for the over-the-air update. Samsung pulls a Samsung, leaks nine new models ahead of MWC

3. February 2009

Comments Off

Filed under: Handsets, Samsung, GSM, EDGE In typical Samsung go-big-or-go-home style, the world's number two phone manufacturer is now expected to announce no fewer than nine new models at this month's Mobile World Congress -- and that's just from the EDGE-powered middle of the range on down. Starting with the most interesting of the school (if we want to go with a fish analogy here), the pictured S5050 brings high style, a 3.2 megapixel cam, 2.2-inch QVGA AMOLED display, and most interestingly, dual SIM slots -- an indication that this will very likely see duty in the Far East. Heading on downrange, the B5702 is almost as awesome but trades the high-tech display for a 2.4-inch TFT. Of course, there's more than just sliders in the mix; you've also got bars like the S3310, which supports microSD expansion, a 2.1-inch QVGA display, and FM radio (an almost ubiquitous feature in developing market phones). The E2210 holds down the clamshell fort -- but to get it, you'll have to be cool with a meager 160 x 128 display and a weak VGA cam. Heading down to the very, very bottom of the range, you get into a couple candybars designed to be accessible to the world's poorest: the E1125 and E1100, which rock 128 x 128 displays, a data-less GSM radio, and 300 / 200-contact phone books, respectively. That E1100 sounds suspiciously like the legendary Nokia 1100, doesn't it? Anyhoo, expect this all to break at MWC, along with the usual array of moderately more droolworthy high-end fodder.[Via GSMArena]Samsung pulls a Samsung, leaks nine new models ahead of MWC originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Tue, 03 Feb 2009 13:03:00 EST.
