Filed under: Announcements Three years ago, mobile phones were but a twinkle in a handful of Motorola and Bell Labs engineers' eyes. The United States was steeped in civil war, Napoleon Bonaparte was gallivanting through Europe, and Julius Caesar had just been brutally betrayed by his most trusted comrades. Yes, it was a crazy time to be alive -- so crazy, in fact, that our dear parents at Engadget saw fit to spin off the choicest, juiciest cuts of phone news into a site to call their own. That site, of course, was Engadget Mobile -- and to this very day, our goal and mission is as clear and unwavering as it ever has been: keep you in the know. Here's the thing, though: we know that we'd be nothing without you, our dear readers. You build us up, tear us down, keep us in check, and tip us with some seriously good stuff. That kind of dedication shouldn't go unappreciated, you know? So, on that note, we want to give out a really cool phone -- read on! In light of MWC next week, Garmin-Asus has made a full announcement about the upcoming nuvifone product line. Which, btw, isn't nearly as fun as spy shots and rumors, but we'll take it. The original G60 that we have been hearing about for nearly a year seems like it will finally be released and might be a solid contender judging by the specs. Garmin-Asus is announcing a new player however, in the smallish WinMo 6.1, M20 handheld that naturally runs Garmin's mapping software which might make a larger splash at MWC than it's big brother. Garmin-Asus is announcing a new player however, in the smallish WinMo 6.1, M20 handheld that naturally runs Garmin’s mapping software which might make a larger splash at MWC than it’s big brother. The original nuvifone, now called the G60, was announced, demoed, and delayed numerous times in ‘08 but it is finally here. The OS runs on a custom flavor of Linux and it comes pre-loaded with your regions maps (North America, Europe, Asia) Plus, Garmin has a new location area software suite named Ciao! that seems similar to Google Latitude but built over the Garmin Maps and compatible with social networking sites. Quad-band HSDPA 3G connectivity Bluetooth & WiFi Accelerometer 3.5-inch touchscreen 3MP geo-tagging camera Pre-loaded maps Car dock included The M20 might not run Linux like it’s big bro, but this little WinMo device seems to have the stuff to stand out. It’s smaller, retains the 3G speed, and available in cute colors. Everyone likes color options. Thankfully, Windows Mobile has been skinned with a Garmin-like home page with quick links to navigation and such. The M20 also comes loaded with Ciao!. Quad-band HSDPA 3G connectivity Bluetooth & WiFi Accelerometer 2.8-inch touchscreen Micro-SD card slot 4 or 8GB of on-board storage 3MP geo-tagging camera Pre-loaded maps Car Dock included Pricing and availability has unfortunately been left out of the press release but hopefully we find those tid-bits out next week at MWC. Chances are that both T-Mobile and AT&T are interested in the 3G devices though, but it’s anyones guess which company would end up with the pair. Filed under: Software, Symbian Nuance's T9 division -- you know, the alpha keypad tech found in virtually every phone sold today -- has rolled out its shiny new T9 Nav software after going through beta last year, offering device-wide searching for device settings, applications, contacts, media, test messages, and pretty much anything else you can think of from one convenient location. Naturally, the app uses T9 to work its magic, which should feel right at home for pretty much anyone who's ever used a phone with a numeric keypad. For now, it's only available for S60 3rd Edition devices, and it'll run you €16.95 (about $22) from Nokia's Software Market.T9 Nav now available on S60 3rd Edition originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Thu, 12 Feb 2009 22:31:00 EST. While the rest of us get to wait for updates to pass through weeks of carrier certification, it seems like someone is leaking these Storm firmware updates every time the code looks stable. This latest leak bumps the (unofficial) version numbers up to OS 4.7.0.106 for the BlackBerry Storm 9500 (GSM) and OS 4.7.0.103 for the BlackBerry Storm 9530 (Verizon’s CDMA model). We’re not seeing anything that looks like a notable new feature, and the early findings indicate that while the accelerometer, transitions, and camera have all become a bit snappier, things are still a bit shaky - which is understandable, as neither of these are official releases. The 9530 update also seems to fix an a recently introduced issue which kept pages javascript code from loading properly. If you’re looking to guinea pig your Storm for the sake of science (Note: These are unofficial updates. Things can break. Install at your own risk), you can find the downloads here: - OS 4.7.0.106 for the BlackBerry Storm 9500 - OS 4.7.0.103 for the BlackBerry Storm 9530 Not sure what to do with’em? Filed under: Others, Studies Think you use your mobile data plan a lot with 3G? Just wait 'til 4G is the pervasive protocol -- you'll be pulling down more bits and bytes than you can ever imagine. Or, at least that's the good word from Cisco. Said company has ran some sort of fancy analysis in order to forecast that global mobile traffic will increase 66-fold between 2008 and 2013, with a compound annual growth rate of 131 percent over the same period. It's stated that these projections reflect the impending transition to 4G, and if you can believe it, we'll supposedly be exceeding two exabytes per month of global mobile traffic by 2013. Curiously, it's stated that 64 percent of the world's mobile traffic will be video by 2013, but given just how slow adoption on that front has been, we're more than skeptical. For the rest of the numbers, give the read link a look.Cisco sees 4G boosting global mobile traffic originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Sat, 14 Feb 2009 03:35:00 EST. Filed under: Multimedia, Windows Mobile We're just days away from Mobile World Congress where Microsoft is expected to make a few notable annoucements. Until then, we have to settle for all the hints and innuendo we can gather as Redmond attempts to win back the hearts, minds, and pocketbooks of consumers infatuated with Android, WebOS, and whatever Apple's got cookin'. Like these supposed 6.5 screenshots above, this time showing what looks like a Marketplace store a la the Zune. We also have CNET reporting today that Microsoft quietly split its Zune team in two on January 22nd: software and services under Enrique Rodriguez, and hardware under Tom Gibbons who just happens to head-up hardware design at Microsoft's Windows Mobile unit. According Rodriguez, "Zune the service needs to transcend Zune the device" adding, "The goal is to make non-gaming entertainment a first-class citizen within Microsoft's business." That includes expanding the Zune service beyond the Zune and onto more devices than just Microsoft's. Or, "a little further out than just in Redmond," to quote Rodriguez directly. While he wouldn't say specifically when it was coming to Windows Mobile, he did say to expect products other than the Zune player to be using the Zune service sometime this year. Now, armed with those Zune-centric WinMo 6.5 screenshots and project Pink leaks, it's not too much a stretch to expect a Zune-like WinMo experience to be detailed in Barcelona. Besides, isn't it about time that Danger made good on that estimated $500 million acquisition?Read -- CNET interviewRead -- Latest WinMo 6.5 screenshosMicrosoft readies Zune service for non-Zune devices, Marketplace appears in WinMo 6.5 screenshot originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Fri, 13 Feb 2009 08:31:00 EST. It requires a bit of beef in the processor/memory departments and is designed for 300 dpi at VGA resolution, so don’t expect a lesser phone than the HTC Touch Pro to handle it with any sort of grace. If you’re ready to dip your feet, the CAB file is available here - but remember, the water might be rough. Brad Lassey of Mozilla on the current development status: Our focus to this point has been to have a working, usable browser. To get there in a hurry we have punted in a few places, and I’d like to point a couple of them out. First is the update mechanism (both for the browser itself and for extensions). After installing this release, you will not be offered updates automatically, so please stay tuned for follow up releases. Also, we have disabled plug-in support. This is one of our high priority items going forward. Finally, as I mentioned before, there is no soft keyboard support. On an HTC Touch Pro, you’ll have to slide out the keyboard to enter a url. Keep up the good work, Fennec-folks! [Via WMExperts] Crunch Network: CrunchBase the free database of technology companies, people, and investors Source[Mobilecrunch]

Filed under: Handsets, LG, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA At this rate, LG isn't gonna have any secrets left about the Arena KM900 when it takes the stage for its Mobile World Congress press conference on Monday. The company's released a few more snippets via its Korean site, chief among them being multitouch capabilities for image and web page zooming. Other details include a dedicated multimedia chip and designations for each of the four sides of the interface's 3D cube: phone, widgets, shortcuts, and multimedia. One of our favorite lines, which is almost certainly made funnier by the machine translation, is that this UI is the culmination of 100 years of interface research. We'll have more on the KM900 -- assuming they don't reveal everything before then -- next week in Barcelona. Filed under: Handsets, Samsung, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS We don't know exactly where this one came from... but these leaked photos appear to be of an Ocean-esque Samsung M7600. Here's what we know about it, spec-wise: it's an HSDPA phone which will have a 3 megapixel camera, GPS, a 2.8-inch AMOLED touchscreen display, and yes, a Bang & Olufsen amplifier. We understand that it'll also sport some kind of of DJ scratching app -- which should make your nightlife way more interesting -- and that it's supposedly set to appear sometime in May of this year (though we'd be surprised if we don't see more of it at MWC). Check a few more shots after the break, and hit the read link to see the device in all its glory. Filed under: Software, Nokia, Symbian Because you're not cool unless you've got an app store, Nokia is reportedly set to join the ranks of Apple, Palm, BlackBerry, Samsung, and pretty much everyone in opening a software portal for its Symbian OS. According to Mobile-Review editor Eldar Murtazin, the Finnish phone maker's already got it running and is testing behind-the-scenes, with a formal announcement to come at the Mobile World Congress. While we'll have to wait until Barcelona to find out with some degree of certainty, at this point we'd be more surprised to see a company not open up an online app shop.
