Filed under: Industry, Tuners, Others Announced today, the Pinnacle PCTV line will soon be property of Hauppauge Digital, not Avid Technology. After laying off 410 employees and divesting its Softimage 3-D game animation software business last Friday, the company has announced yet another major move in its restructuring efforts. According to Avid CEO Gary Greenfield, he's hoping to transform Avid's business into one that "focuses on software applications that not only meet consumer demand, but also complement our broader portfolio of video and audio solutions." Even he confessed that "PCTV [was] a compelling standalone hardware product and a better fit for Hauppauge, a recognized leader in the TV-viewing hardware market." While financial terms weren't disclosed, the deal is slated to close before the end of 2008, and the happy new owner has already announced its intentions to continue supporting and developing both the hardware and software components of the PCTV line.Avid sells PCTV product line to Hauppauge Digital originally appeared on Engadget HD on Mon, 27 Oct 2008 14:35:00 EST. Filed under: Camcorders Sanyo yesterday announced a plethora of "dual camera" models (camcorders with still capture aspirations) and Geek.com's Chris Gampat was lucky enough to get a little hands on time with the lot, choosing three favorites from the scrum: the VPC-FH1, VPC-HD2000, and VPC-WH1. The first two are similar in terms of specs, both capturing 1080p video at 60fps and 8 megapixel stills at 12fps through a 10x optical zoom. They differ only in form factor, the VPC-FH1 offering a traditional style and the VPC-HD2000 coming with a pistol grip. Sanyo's VPCP-WH1 is the more adventurous of the three, waterproof down to 10 feet and coming in a "look at me, sailor" yellow, but only shooting 720p video at 30fps and 2 megapixel stills. However, its 30x optical zoom is perfect for spotting Piping Plovers, and the 3.5 hour battery life means this thing can probably survive longer underwater than you. Videos of these three are embedded below, and surely one them fits your lifestyle, so make a little room this spring, won't you? Filed under: Industry, Displays, LCD, Plasma Those price drops you've been noticing are more than a figment of your imagination. In fact, they're very, very real. According to hot-off-the-press research from DisplaySearch, global TV internet pricing for TVs declined 22% on average this September compared to a year ago. More specifically, plasma prices sank (on average) 27%, while CRT stickers actually rose 4%. When looking at the all-important LCD TV category, we're told that prices in Europe declined the most at 30%, while China, North America and Japan were down 20 percent, 16 percent and 4 percent, respectively. Also of note, it was the big screen sets plummeting the most, as 52-inch LCD TVs sank nearly 30% year-over-year while 20-inch LCD TVs dropped just 4%. Oh, and we'd totally expect to see things head further south exactly one month from today -- at least in America.[Via CNET, image courtesy of DayLife]Global TV pricing sinks 22% year-over-year in September originally appeared on Engadget HD on Tue, 28 Oct 2008 13:54:00 EST. Filed under: Blu-rayIn a recent report by the NPD group, it is revealed that on average consumers pay $10 more for a Blu-ray Disc then for a DVD. The real interesting part is that evidently that is still to much for some titles. The report goes on to say that while consumers have no problem paying $10 more for titles like The Dark Knight, other movies just aren't worth it. Of course this points to the obvious fact that if Blu-ray Discs cost less more people would 'em. We can't blame Hollywood for trying to get the best price they can for their wares, but at the same time we can understanding waiting for the prices to come down before buying. The other interesting part of the report is how many more men are into Blu-ray then women. We won't even begin to try to understand this one though. On average consumers pay $10 more for Blu-ray Discs than DVD originally appeared on Engadget HD on Wed, 31 Dec 2008 19:36:00 EST.
