It’s been a slow, painful death, but it’s about time to just pull the white sheet over ultra-wideband and let the wireless standard rest in peace. After Intel pulled its support for UWB and proponent WiQuest shut down late last year, all that the format really had left was TZero. After successfully surviving some legal issues, we thought the company was good to go in fighting a hopeless battle against wireless HD upstart AMIMON. Now, it seems that WHDI (that’s AMIMON’s magic) is free to take the market by storm, but only time will tell if wireless HD is even remotely close to mainstream. In one sense, we’re sad to see competition die, but on the other hand, it’s always good to see fruitless format wars fade away. Don’t be too down on yourself, TZero — it’s not like anyone really had high expectations for you or anything.

No way Obama was going to veto this after driving it all the way through Congress, but technically, the digital TV delay wasn’t actually official until now. Late today, America’s President signed his name onto the bill which will delay the digital TV transition from February 17th to June 12th, though a provision allows stations to switch over beforehand should they choose. In fact, hundreds of stations still plan to kill analog later this month, as they’ve been planning towards that date for years now. Honestly, we can’t figure out what the purpose of this is. Unless there’s more cash for the currently dry voucher program tucked away somewhere in that mind-bogglingly large “stimulus package,” delaying the pain won’t solve a thing. Though it will confuse the hell out of people, so there’s that.

Slow down, Watch Instantly fans, both HBO and Netflix are at least claiming there have been no talks about setting up a “premium tier” resembling a question posed in a recent survey. Multichannel News confirmed with Netflix the survey was real so we’ll keep a seat open next to Starz just in case, so hey, if Showtime or epix is looking for a partner we’ve got a great idea for you.

The first ever live concert DVD from Stevie Wonder will be worth the wait, as his O2 Arena performance from last fall comes home in high quality. Featuring some of his biggest hits, a performance by his daughter can covers of Beatles and Rolling Stones songs, it’s all captured on a 50GB Blu-ray disc in 1080i, with a lossless DTS-HD MA soundtrack. It makes sense that such a release should have the highest quality audio, fans can check it out March 10.

Bad news first: there might be a bit more competition than you expected for that home theater giveaway. Good luck bringing down Netflix’s shooting star though, as if last week’s good news train wasn’t enough comes news that over a million Xbox Live Gold members have already downloaded and activated the Watch Instantly app since its NXE debut last November. That’s more than 10% of Netflix’s just announced 9.4 million subscribers who’ve already watched over 1.5 billion minutes of TV and movies through their consoles. They’re not the only ones happy, while streaming may be eating into DVD rentals, Xbox Live Marketplace rentals are up 174 percent year over year. The streaming library is up to 12,000 titles, with a “growing percentage” in high definition, for the rest of the celebratory details check the full PR after the break. We’ve been on a media streamer kick lately and decided to check the Popcorn Hour A-110 to see what all the fuss is about. Our first impressions are positive, but we’ll hold out sharing too much until we’ve had more time to play. We’re willing to share a few details though like the fact that the remote feels really good considering the price point ($179), the thumbscrews on the top give easy access to the drive bay (drive not included).
